WordThink Word of The Day

"Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy."-The Downing Street Memo, 7/23/2002

Another Leaked Memo: U.S. Lacked Full Postwar Iraq Plan
Saturday, June 11, 2005

Didn't the administration say Iraq would be a "cake walk"? According to another leaked British memo, even the British govt. knew that there would be a "'protracted and costly' postwar occupation of that country. '" In addition, they said the administration was inadequately preparing for the foreseeable outcome of the invasion.

They Want An Exit Strategy

Finally!

And it's bipartisan, too. This is a very good sign. With the U.S. fatalities reaching 1,700, members of Congress, including some Republicans, are finally saying screw Bush's image. Conditions in Iraq are not improving and the longer we occupy that country, the deeper in debt and body bags we get.

Boston Globe:

Representative Walter Jones of North Carolina, a conservative Republican who voted to authorize force, said his district is growing weary of a war that has cost the lives of more than 1,600 US troops and left more than 12,000 wounded.

''I'm hearing: 'How much do we have to do? We're giving blood. We're giving money. What is the final chapter for our involvement?' I think people are looking to the administration for an explanation, whether we have done all we can do," said Jones, whose district is home to 60,000 retired military personnel.

Jones said he felt misled by the administration on the reasons for the war because no weapons of mass destruction have been found. ''If I knew [then] what I knew today, I would not have voted for the resolution," Jones said. [More]

Believe it or not, I took this photo.

I originally planned on going to this KRON blogger event. But my sister-in-law's brother, Paul, was having his bon voyage BarBQ today, and, hey, there's more to life than just blogging, right?

Naaaaa.

By the way, it was a beautiful day in Golden Gate Park.

Howard Dean Speaks For Me

Those gasbags need to pay attention because Howard Dean has a lot more support than they thought.
"I hope Governor Dean will remember that he didn't get elected to be a wimp," said DNC member Gilda Cobb-Hunter, a South Carolina state representative. "We have been waiting a long time for someone to stand up for Democrats."

[...]

Some Democrats in Washington, including party congressional leaders and several potential 2008 White House candidates, distanced themselves from Dean's comments and called them mistakes.

But in a series of interviews DNC members backed the former Vermont governor, known for his fiery rhetoric during his failed 2004 White House run, and said they knew what they were getting when they elected him in February as chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

"Howard Dean is going to be much more aggressive, much more outspoken and much more of a risk-taker outside the Beltway than any chairman has been. We knew that," said Alvaro Cifuentes, chairman of the DNC Hispanic caucus.

"We have to get our politics out of Washington. We cannot continue to be held captive by party leaders who I respect but who have to play their own local politics," Cifuentes said, calling congressional Democrats "timid" and the flap over his comments "mostly a Beltway play."[More]

Bush Exaggerates Conviction Numbers

Because that's what it'll take to sell a lemon.

WaPo:
On Thursday, President Bush stepped to a lectern at the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy in Columbus to urge renewal of the USA Patriot Act and to boast of the government's success in prosecuting terrorists.

Flanked by Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, Bush said that "federal terrorism investigations have resulted in charges against more than 400 suspects, and more than half of those charged have been convicted."

Those statistics have been used repeatedly by Bush and other administration officials, including Gonzales and his predecessor, John D. Ashcroft, to characterize the government's efforts against terrorism.

But the numbers are misleading at best.

An analysis of the Justice Department's list of terrorism prosecutions by The Washington Post shows that 39 people -- not 200 -- have been convicted of crimes related to terrorism or national security.

Most of the others were convicted of relatively minor crimes such as making false statements and violating immigration law -- and had nothing to do with terrorism, the analysis shows. Overall, the median sentence was just 11 months. [More]

Watch the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee Violate House Rules
Friday, June 10, 2005

Sensenbrenner actually cut the microphones off and ended the hearing at his own discretion. Not only was this an attempt to silence the Democrats and dissent, but a blatant violation of House Rules.

Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz has the details.

Can We PLEASE Send These People To Iraq?

I'm serious. Draft 'em! If anyone deserves to be sent over there it's most of the members of this audience. If it were the other way around, I would love -- sincerely love to see someone strong, intelligent and articulate on our side address the concerns of someone from their side. The problem with their side is, they won't debate Iraq and this administration's foreign policy because they'd lose leaving them with the only retort as uttered by that young woman, equally deserving of a trip to that "democracy" George built, "will you sit down?" Republicans Filibuster, Too!
Thursday, June 09, 2005

I bet you thought only the Democrats did. And, apparently, only Republicans can impose litmus tests. In Julie Finley's case, she's pro-choice, a position which, by the way, has nothing to do with the post for which she was nominated. Weren't the Republicans preaching about how undemocratic it was for the Democrats to block an up-or-down vote of the President's nominees? Obstructionist, thy name is Brownback. Remember that name.

gulfnews.com:
A senior US military chief has admitted "good, honest" Iraqis are fighting American forces.

Major General Joseph Taluto said he could understand why some ordinary people would take up arms against the US military because "they're offended by our presence".

In an interview with Gulf News, he said: "If a good, honest person feels having all these Humvees driving on the road, having us moving people out of the way, having us patrol the streets, having car bombs going off, you can understand how they could [want to fight us]."

[...]

His comments come in stark contrast to the assertions of other top US figures, who persist in claiming all insurgents are either Baathists or Al Qaida terrorists.

Cut & Smear

Watch Bill O'Reilly cut portions of Joe Biden's interview and claim Biden's position (the part he cut out) as his own. And as for the part he did play for his dwindling viewing audience, O'Reilly used it to misrepresent and attack the Democratic Senator. This level of deceit, if it isn't, should be criminal.

Catholic Church Pays High Price For Abuse Settlements

I wonder if the faithful know where their bucks are going. Legal fees? Probably.

AP:
The cost to the U.S. Roman Catholic Church of sexual predators in the priesthood has climbed past $1 billion, according to tallies by American bishops and an Associated Press review of known settlements.

And the figure is guaranteed to rise, probably by tens of millions of dollars, because hundreds more claims are pending.

Dioceses around the country have spent at least $1.06 billion on settlements with victims, verdicts, legal fees, counseling and other expenses since 1950, the AP found. A $120 million compensation fund announced last week by the Diocese of Covington, Ky., pushed the figure past the billion-dollar mark.

A large share of the costs — at least $378 million — have been incurred in just the past three years, when the crisis erupted in the Boston Archdiocese and spread nationwide. [More]

Members of Gold Star Families for Peace will be meeting with members of Congress to demand Congressional members do their sworn duty to the American people and the Constitution of the United States of America. They're going to demand a Resolution of Inquiry into the Downing Street Minutes which may lead to IMPEACHMENT.

Last time I checked, my Congressman, Tom Lantos, was a no-show on Conyers' letter to President Bush. We need to put serious pressure on these people and let them know that we support the Gold Star Families and demand Congress investigate the memo. [More HERE]

Delusional! Delusional!

Sean Hannity got his butt whooooooped! by Rosie O'Donnell. Yes, Sean, we ARE better off with Saddam in prison, as are our economy, credibility, 1600+ dead servicemen and women, their families and ours. Like Rosie said, the man is delusional.

When Democrats Attack Republicans
Monday, June 06, 2005

Now THIS is what the Dems should be saying and how they should be saying it! Better yet, take these speeches beyond the fundraisers. If she keeps this up, "President Clinton" may not be so far fetched. Her poll numbers are good. In fact, they've actually improved, and it appears she's learned a thing or two from the Kerry and Gore campaigns. One of which, don't soften your blows.

Ben Stein

I remember Ben Stein's game show in which contestants had to beat him in a trivia contest in order to win his money. Sufficed to say, Mr. Stein won most of the time simply because the guy was smart in the sense that his brain was jam-packed with data despite his being a numskull - confirmed the day I saw him on C-Span pitching his latest book (at the time). He was ranting against liberalism, how racism no longer exists, and everything else someone living in his own little bubble would be privy to. So when he wrote that Felt (a.ka. Deep Throat) was responsible for our losing Vietnam, I wasn't too surprised.

Still Gov. Gregoire

Thankfully, Judge Bridges isn't one of those activist judges. Maybe even the Republicans will strive for election reform.

Texas Governor Erases Line Separating Church and State

Reprehensible, disgraceful, UNAMERICAN, anti-democratic Texas Gov. Perry signed an anti-gay marriage law INSIDE A CHURCH. Crooks and Liars has the video. I didn't watch it. Seeing the still is enough for me.

Sunk

Now that Bill won't be appearing, do you think participation will go up? Spending a week with the biggest blow-hard on television - who'd pass THAT up? I guess the "Caribbean fantasy week with O'Reilly" seemed more like a nightmare which is pretty unmarketable unless your target audience is the S&M crowd. But, then again, what pleasure can be derived from a week with Mr. O'Reilly?

Sweet Jesus, I Hate Bill O'Reilly, Intl. has the details.

Dems Attacking Dean
Sunday, June 05, 2005

This is truly aggravating. Instead of focusing their energies attacking Dean, these Democrats should be attacking the Bush administration. Bush, Cheney and their bunch of liars have been spewing the truly offensive with little a cheep coming from the mouths of these political opportunists. Biden doesn't speak for me, NOR does Edwards. Dean speaks for me and has been doing so even before these jerks entertained the idea of running for office. [Link]
