WordThink Word of The Day

"Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy."-The Downing Street Memo, 7/23/2002

The Underground Railroad to Canada
Tuesday, April 06, 2004

There's a resurgence of the Underground Railroad:

Too young to buy a beer, but old enough to die for their country. This irony is not lost on Americans who have chosen to flee the US in search of refuge in Canada. For some it's a race against time before the army figures out they are gone.

Canada may not be the "greatest" country in the world, but it's close enough, particularly if the cost of remaining in the U.S. is greater than you're willing to pay for your "government's mistake."

Most who decide to run away do so because they don't want to end up dead or, if not killed by the enemy, then driven crazy and ultimately shooting themselves. Sandwiched between Mexico to the south and Canada to the north, the vast majority choose the latter for their escape. There are a number of reasons for this, mostly because of the cultural similarities and the ease by which they can cross the border.

Plus, having your family visit is relatively feasible. You just won't be able to return the favor. I've heard Canada's a nice place to visit, anyway, so I don't see too many complaints. The new govt., however, is Bush friendly which doesn't help should you seek asylum. The citizenry for the most part, though, is pretty anti-bush. Some defectors have even found help through the Internet.

Doesn't He Have Some Studying To Do?

Nice day for a Cardinals' game. With all the chaos going on in Iraq, (i.e. death, destruction, civil war, etc.), there's nothing like a good baseball game to take you away from all that. But Bush had better start cramming. Bummer.

How Do You Ask a Man to Be the Last Man to Die in [Iraq]?

"In our opinion and from our experience, there is nothing in South Vietnam which could happen that realistically threatens the United States of America. And to attempt to justify the loss of one American life in Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos by linking such loss to the preservation of freedom, which those misfits supposedly abuse, is to us the height of criminal hypocrisy, and it is that kind of hypocrisy which we feel has torn this country apart." - John Kerry, April 23, 1971

Replace "South Vietnam" with "Iraq," and you still make a pretty compelling argument.

Nice That He Cleared THAT One Up!

Asked why he was appearing with Cheney -- as opposed to appearing alone before the commission-- Bush replied, "It will be a great opportunity for them to ask both of us our opinions on the subject."

My jaw hit the floor, too, when I read his answer. I wonder if there was a follow-up to this imbecilic response. No wonder he'll need Cheney to hold his hand during the 911 Q&A.

Iraqi Liberation = Freedom Minus Free Speech (huh?)

I was skimming through Buzzflash's headlines this morning (it's after midnight as I post this), and was taken aback by an article on the latest developments in Iraq concerning the new government departments that Bremer plans to establish. The Iraq Public Service Broadcaster Commission, in particular, raised an eyebrow.

Another new government agency will be created because a free and democratic Iraq has no need for government-sponsored propaganda, Bremer announced. "Government-owned media exist to inform the public," he said, "not to promote the political interests of the president or prime minister of the moment."

A new Iraq Public Service Broadcaster Commission -independent of the government-will be established to regulate publicly owned media. And to ensure Iraqi airwaves "are administered in the public interest, the Iraqi Communications and Media Commission will administer their use independently of the government," Bremer added.

Alright, that incited a double take as well.

There are actually a lot of censorship stories out right now.

Here are a few:

  • U.S. closure of Shiite cleric's newspaper spurs threat of strike more...
  • Keep freedom of press in Iraq (related to above story) more...
  • Marines limiting info about attacks on troops more...
  • American television behind Iraq curtain more...
  • FCC leader to stay tuned to racy soaps more... I know, it's television, but "Guiding Light" actually revealed a character's "bare bottom." Did that make front page?

  • "Embarrassing!"
    Friday, April 02, 2004

For someone who proudly proclaims himself a "war president," George W. Bush doesn't seem to have the backbone to face the September 11th commission on his own. "It's embarrassing," says Nancy Pelosi, "to the president of the United States that they won't let him go in without holding the hand of the vice president of the United States." The House Minority Leader continued..."I think it reinforces the idea that the president cannot go it alone," she said. "The president should stand tall, walk in the room himself and answer the questions." Remember "Bring 'em on" when President Bush challenged the Iraqi militants threatening our troops? Apparently, he can muster up the courage to invite danger so long as he's cowering safely behind those who'll do the fighting and dieing for him. Hopefully, John Kerry is paying attention to at least some of this. If he wants to counter Bush's claim that he will "protect and defend the American people," as stated at Bush's [RE]election website, Kerry ought to challenge him to face the commission alone. Surely, Bush would not have the contention to challenge Thomas Kean et al if his refusal to even accept Kerry's challenge to a series of civilized debates serves as an indicator of his lack of a spine.

    Our Girl Pelosi Nails It

I'm proud of our Minority House Leader Nancy Pelosi. Via Kos, Nancy tells it like it is.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi says it's baffling and embarrassing that President Bush is appearing before the Sept. 11 commission with Vice President Dick Cheney at his side instead of by himself.

"I think it speaks to the lack of confidence that the administration has in the president going forth alone, period," Pelosi, D-Calif., said Friday. "It's embarrassing to the president of the United States that they won't let him go in without holding the hand of the vice president of the United States."

"I think it reinforces the idea that the president cannot go it alone," she said. "The president should stand tall, walk in the room himself and answer the questions."

    Bush V. Dave V. CNN

Letterman was only in it for the laughs, but now he's pretty annoyed. Have you seen the video? It's a HOOT!!! To make a not so long and odd story short, Letterman aired video of a speech Bush gave which showed an obviously bored and sleepy kid behind him. The White House, which finds it vitally important in this war on terror to spend its time watching late night variety shows, contacts CNN to tell them that the film was doctored. CNN, without checking the facts, announces that the footage was doctored, and Letterman gets steamed because it wasn't. Don't blame CNN for not confirming..I mean, for one, confirming the facts is what legitimate news organizations do, and two, our government, especially under the George W. Bush administration, wouldn't lie.

    Bush For Fetus Rights
    Thursday, April 01, 2004

"This little soul never saw light, but he is loved and he is remembered."

Bush was referring to Laci Peterson's baby. Today, he signed legislation expanding legal rights of the unborn. I normally wouldn't question one's sincerity when he says he respects human life, particularly that of the unborn. However, George W. Bush is a hypocrite. He has absolutely no regard, respect or reverence for human life.

    Look at his record:

  • As governor, he wanted to gain political points by setting a record as the governor with the most executions under his belt regardless of their innocence.

  • Signed a ban on late term abortions with no exceptions even if the mother's health (i.e. life) was at risk.

  • The needless war in Iraq. How many babies did he kill with the 30,000 PLUS bombs he dropped over there? I would also like to remind the reader of the now 600+ of our own dead including the four American contractors in Fallua, and the tens of thousands more non-infant Iraqi civilians.

  • The 911 victims. By stonewalling the commission, he's essentially spitting on their graves.

These were just a few examples that came to mind.
