WordThink Word of The Day

"Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy."-The Downing Street Memo, 7/23/2002

Could It Get Any Worse?
Saturday, May 08, 2004

Those photos, as bad as they were, may actually be the quiet before the storm. From the AP:
While the world already has been horrified by pictures of American soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners, the Pentagon warns there are many more photos and videos that have not been disclosed.

They show "acts that can only be described as blatantly sadistic, cruel and inhuman," embattled Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told Congress.

Though most Americans, according to this poll, including Dems 2-1, believe Rumsfeld should hold on to his job, it's just a matter of time before he decides to fold (my prediction, of course).

Blogosphere: We Have A Job To Do

Upon reading this entry in Ornicus about the state of our media, I got angry. A few emotions, good and bad (mostly bad) came upon me. It's a must read analysis of the blatant disregard of our media to look and report on the real issues that affect every single one of us.
We still treat our national politics like a combination sporting event and gossipfest. We're still demeaning the national discourse with a steady diet of propaganda/spin souffle served up on a platter of triviality, with a side of slander.

In the process, we keep the public (a large portion of it willingly) in the dark about the very real politics and policies that directly affect their security and well-being, both here and now and for the long haul.

The question now remains what do we, in our own little individual blog worlds, about our current state of media affairs? Ornicus explains:

As the conglomeration and consolidation of the mass media has proceeded apace through the past two decades unchecked, that independence has largely vanished or become effectively strangled, and with it a responsible treatment of the public interest by the nation's press. The traditional media filters have instead become bottlenecks, preventing information that is in fact vital for the public well-being from ever reaching them -- oftentimes for reasons that are trivial and puerile, not to mention geared toward the manipulation of the media in the service of corporate powers and their agenda.

The blogosphere is a direct result of those bottlenecks. Information is now flowing around them through the networks of dissemination that blogs have become.

Blogs represent, in fact, the real democratization of journalism, which traditionally has always been about the work of keeping the public duly and properly informed. Stories and vital facts now no longer need go through the New York Times and NBC News in order to gain wide distribution. Blogs can effectively reach as many people as several large city dailies combined. And the network of their combined efforts represents a massive shift of data around the traditional media filters.

Blogs can also be terrific means for organizing, particularly for putting together a concerted response to political and media atrocities. One need only survey the ability of blogs to affect real-world politics -- their role in bringing about the fall of Trent Lott was just a start -- to understand that their power can readily extend to reshaping the media, since they represent in themselves a kind of citizens' solution to needed reforms in the media.

To bring that about, two things are needed: 1) A recognition that this power exists, and 2) Organizing in a thoughtful and effective fashion to wield it.

It seems to me that a manifesto -- a definitive statement of revolt against the media status quo and an outline of the purposes and strategies of that revolt -- is what's needed.

And finally and most importantly is Ornicus' Media Revolt Manifesto. Go over to Ornicus and read the entire entry and then blogosphere, let's get to work. Our country and our world is on the line.

The End Of Torture Or So They Said

Why is their credibility in the toilet? The following Bush Administration statements should shed some light. The glare is blinding.
"The Iraqi people are now free. And they do not have to worry about the secret police coming after them in the middle of the night, and they don't have to worry about their husbands and brothers being taken off and shot, or their wives being taken to rape rooms. Those days are over."- Paul Bremer, Administrator, [Iraq] Coalition Provisional Authority, Sept. 2, 2003

"Iraq is free of rape rooms and torture chambers."- President Bush, remarks to 2003 Republican National Committee Presidential Gala, Oct. 8, 2003

"One thing is for certain: There won't be any more mass graves and torture rooms and rape rooms." - Bush, press availability in Monterrey, Mexico, Jan. 12, 2004

This Almost Was A Non-Issue

I hope the American people are paying attention to the fine print: Our government had been aware for months. ONLY they didn't realize there were pictures.

USA Today (yesterday):

  • The Pentagon acknowledged this week that enough concerns were raised last fall to prompt a "top-level review" of how its Iraqi detention centers were being run.

  • Abuses at Abu Ghraib were brought to the attention of commanders in Iraq by a tip from an unidentified soldier in January.

  • A damning report by a general assigned to investigate the charges has been lying around the Pentagon since March 3, apparently without getting the attention of any top decision-maker. The report documented "numerous incidents of sadistic, blatant and wanton criminal abuses."

  • Now Bush is in damage-control mode, acting the part of the grief-stricken, even apologetic leader pretending to scold Rumsfeld (the legendary chiding was conveniently leaked to the press, by the way) and going for that repeat performance as our ignorant THUS inculpable commander in chief:
Still, the president confirmed his irritation that he had learned about the allegations only after they were reported in the news media saying, "I should have known about the pictures and about the report."

Hmmmm...Right. If That's the case, the American people have an alternative come November:
"As president, I will not be the last to know what is going on in my command. I will demand accountability for those who serve, take responsibility for actions."

    Well said Senator.

America NOW Chooses America Over Saddam
    Thursday, May 06, 2004

According to the results of the NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll released yesterday (I know, OLD news in blogdom), a majority of Americans (47%) now feel that the removal of Saddam Hussein wasn't worth it. 42% are still hanging on, desperately, I imagine, probably by their bloody fingernails. As for the rest of America? That remaining 11% is probably too bogged down to worry about what's going on in Iraq with all the domestic calamity they've got to deal with like that "American Idol" scandal and the demise of "Friends." I'm kidding. Speaking of polls, I was surprised at the results of SF Gate's (SF Chronicle) online poll. The Bay Area is pretty liberal, so given that fact, I was still pretty surprised:

FYI: I cast the 2,518th vote (you can probably guess how I voted).

    Tillman: Human Being/War Hero

Gwen Knapp wrote a great article in the San Francisco Chronicle about the ceremony honoring fallen soldier Pat Tillman that's worth a read.

Regarding my last post, John says I "wimped out" of expressing my opinion on the controversial Ted Rall cartoon as if anyone cared. So here are my 2 pennies:

Pat Tillman enlisted in the Army shortly after 911. He believed he was doing the right thing for his country. He did what a lot of young men in his position (yes, sacrificing wealth and fame) would not. Afghanistan housed Al Qaeda, thus the war fought there can be reasonably argued on both sides. As for our government exploiting Tillman and his fellow "cogs" for the bigger prize won by Bush's oil company friends? Does the word "pipeline" ring a bell? As for Tillman being a racist? I don't know. I didn't know him. Did Rall? Will the news media milk this for all its worth? Not to take anything away from Tillman, but the word "hero" draws a lot of attention, especially when you're talking about someone who gave up fortune and fame (he could have been a pro-football star of all things!) to enlist in the war on terror and then paying the ultimate price. Unless Rall had anything on Tillman to the contrary, his cartoon was an unfair characterization of this man who, unfortunately, can't defend himself.

    Out of pennies.

    Tillman Off Limits
    Tuesday, May 04, 2004

Ted Rall's latest cartoon questioning Pat Tillman's "heroism" ignited the reactionaries and non-reactionaries alike (I'm sure). For those who aren't familiar with Tillman, Tillman played football, was quite good at it, but turned down a multi-million dollar contract to play professionally in order to enlist in the U.S. Army after 911. He was sent to Afghanistan and was killed in combat last month.

    Here's the cartoon.

Now, before you reactionaries and non-reactionaries react, I suggest you read Dave Astor's article. Though I doubt it would make much difference.
Rall, who traveled to Afghanistan as a cartoonist/writer after 9/11, told E&P: "The word 'hero' has been bandied about a lot to refer to anyone killed in Afghanistan or Iraq. But anyone who voluntarily goes to Afghanistan or Iraq [as a soldier] is fighting for an evil cause under an evil commander in chief."

"Tillman gave up millions of dollars," Rall added. "To that extent I think he's admirable, but the cause is not. ... He would have been a better person and a better husband if he took the $3.6 million and played football and left the poor and beleaguered people of Afghanistan and Iraq alone."

I'm going to keep my .02 to myself on this one.

    Bremer Backtracking
    Sunday, May 02, 2004

Paul Bremer, the U.S. administrator in Iraq, took back comments he made six months before the 911 attacks criticizing the Bush administration's handling of terrorism.

    Bremer THEN (2/26/01):
"The new administration seems to be paying no attention to the problem of terrorism. What they will do is stagger along until there's a major incident and then suddenly say, 'Oh, my God, shouldn't we be organized to deal with this?'

"That's too bad. They've been given a window of opportunity with very little terrorism now, and they're not taking advantage of it."

    Bremer NOW (5/2/2004):
Bremer said his remarks three years ago "reflected my frustration" that none of his commission's recommendations had been implemented by Clinton or the new Bush administration.

"Criticism of the new administration, however, was unfair. President Bush had just been sworn into office and could not reasonably be held responsible for the Federal Government's inaction over the preceding 7 months," Bremer's Sunday statement said.

"I regret any suggestion to the contrary. In fact, I have since learned that President Bush had shared some of these frustrations, and had initiated a more direct and comprehensive approach to confronting terrorism consistent with the threats outlined in the National Commission report.

"I am strongly supportive and grateful for the President's leadership and strategy in combating terrorism and protecting American national security throughout his first term in office."

The WORST security failure in this nation's history occurred under this "president's" first term. He tried his best to prevent the formation of the commission investigating these failures, and after his failure to prevent it's inception, his administration stonewalled the commission's request for full cooperation from refusing to provide the documents needed to complete the commission's investigation to this administration's blatant refusal to allow key officials from testifying under oath including the National Security Advisor (who eventually did so after public disgust) to the President and Vice President themselves.

I don't buy Bremer's recent suck-up. It's interesting how his remarks in 2001 coincide with those documented in O'Neill's, Clarke's, and Woodward's accounts. Looks to me he's doing damage control. He doesn't want to add to voter backlash (rising at it is) that may result in a Bush defeat in November, and if Bush is [re]elected, he doesn't want to lose his job. If Bush had "initiated a more direct and comprehensive approach to confronting terrorism," show the American people any concrete evidence that he had. Unless I missed something, no one in this administration has yet to do so.
