Pelosi Reality Check: We Are F-cked!

Nancy Pelosi is speaking out, bluntly, and unapologetically:
The time has come to speak very frankly about the lack of leadership in the White House.

So the emperor has no clothes. When are people going to face the reality? Pull the curtain back.

So what was the typical GOP response to her impassioned candor?

Tom DeLay:
She apparently is so caught up in the partisan hatred for President Bush that her words are putting American lives at risk. This nation cannot afford the luxury of her dangerous rhetoric.

I wonder what his position was on that whole "Bring 'em on" fiasco.

So to Tom Delay, rhetoric is criticizing the Bush administration for bankrupting the U.S. treasury for a war based on lies, deception, "mis-speaking," a war of George W. Bush's choosing for which not only our grandchildren will be paying, but the generations after them, and one that has cost the lives of nearly 800 of our own and thousands more who've suffered irreversible physical, psychological and emotional damage. While Delay attacks those with the courage to speak out, more are dying everyday due to this President's policies and they're not just the Iraqi people. What's dangerous is having that man remain in the position of power given to him by the Supreme Court. What might be even more dangerous is when those like Pelosi don't speak out for fear of appearing "unpatriotic." Does that sound familiar? Pelosi said that "the time has come to speak." No. THAT time came a long time ago, but it hasn't overstayed it's welcome, not as long as this administration is making policy.

Her alleged rhetoric?
"The situation in Iraq and the reckless economic policies in the United States speak to one issue for me, and that is the competence of our leader," Pelosi said. "These policies are not working. But speaking specifically to Iraq, we have a situation where -- without adequate evidence -- we put our young people in harm's way."

Asked specifically if she was calling Bush incompetent, Pelosi replied:

"I believe that the president's leadership in the actions taken in Iraq demonstrate an incompetence in terms of knowledge, judgment and experience in making the decisions that would have been necessary to truly accomplish the mission without the deaths to our troops and the cost to our taxpayers."

Understandably, the Republicans want the House Minority leader to apologize. Don't count on it. I hope I'm right.

Meet Buddha & Mr. Magoo

Buddha is a lovable 16 year-old pug of Drew from Drew's K-9 Corner on Geary in San Francisco. When you walk into Drew's store, a holistic/natural health food store for pets, you'll be met by Buddha and also by Mr. Magoo, who will most likely come right up to and slam into your legs. You see, Mr. Magoo is blind. I love going into Drew's not just because of Buddha, Mr. Magoo and Bella but also to talk to Drew who is your typical New Yorker type. Always full of energy. Come meet Buddha, Mr. Magoo and Bella at Drew's!

Giuliani WHO???
Wednesday, May 19, 2004

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has apparently lossed his glow with the people. He was heckled Wednesday by families of the victims of the September 11 attacks when he testified before the 911 commission (yes, that's still going on). If you don't remember, then Mayor Giuliani came this short of being canonized by the people of New York City for his leadership, in the aftermath of the attacks. How times have changed.
"My son was murdered because of your incompetence!" shouted Sally Regenhard, whose firefighter son died in the trade center. Seated three rows behind Giuliani, she jabbed her finger at the former mayor and waved a sign that read "Fiction" as he gave the city's emergency response a glowing review.

I guess his appearance was more of a PR move, and the families smelled a rat. That was a bad choice of words. I like rats - the domesticated ones, at least. They're intelligent creatures and they don't bite. Anyway...
Monica Gabrielle, who lost her husband, Richard, called it a "lost opportunity."

"This was not a time for Rudy Giuliani to talk about all the great things he did on 9/11," she said. "He can save that for his talking tours. He should have told us what went wrong and what we should do now."

This is where a lot of the hostility is coming from:
The commission released two reports that mark the most comprehensive probe to date of New York's response on Sept 11. The findings detailed a list of failings including poor communication, gulfs in cooperation between police and firefighters and grave deficiencies in the city's 911 emergency telephone network.

The families' growing frustration was intensified by the panel's soft-ball questions, and the commission chairman's praise of the former Mayor didn't help either.
"New York City, on that terrible day, in a sense was blessed because it had you as leader," said commission chairman and former New Jersey Gov. Thomas Kean. "It had somebody who was a great, great leader to take charge of a terrible, terrible event. You also had, as you've told us, some of the best people in the country to call on who worked for you and worked for the city."

There was also a heated exchange between the family members and Kean. They demand the truth for which I applaud them. I'm also glad they're seeing Guliani for the louse he really is.

Another Memo
Tuesday, May 18, 2004

There's a memo making big news right now that pretty much implicates the Bush administration in the Iraqi prison abuse scandal. Didn't Bush lay the blame on those "few" (scroll down) he referenced in his weekly radio address?
My administration and our military are determined that such abuses never happen again. All Americans know that the actions of a few do not reflect the true character of the United States Armed Forces.

The memo from White House Chief Counsel Alberto Gonzales recommended that the administration set aside the Geneva Conventions in the treatment of Taliban and Al Qaeda prisoners in order to facilitate the "ability to quickly obtain information" with little risk of war crimes prosecution.

Colin Powell, however, disagreed and sent his own memo recommending that they stick to the rules of the Geneva Conventions because doing otherwise would put our own troops at risk and make the U.S. look really bad to the world.

Guess whose advice Bush took. Let's think of that, shall we, while those few on the bottom rung of this political ladder are getting tried for doing the bidding of those at the top.

Tony Randall (1920-2004)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

I remember those "Odd Couple" re-runs. My older sister reminded me of Felix Unger when she'd get into that dreaded cleaning mode. Her obsession led us into a cleaning frenzy (mine forced upon me, of course) at 2 in the morning on school nights or mornings, rather. I think that's why to this day I hate dusting. Tony Randall died today. He was 84. There's an article in the SF Chronicle about his life and death. I particularly enjoyed this:
Randall joked in September about how he envisioned his funeral: President Bush and Vice President Cheney would show up to pay their respects, but they'd be turned away because his family knows he didn't like them.

Political commentary aside, here are some interesting facts about the late great theatre actor:

  • Named Leonard Rosenberg at birth.

  • Was in the Army during WWII.

  • Made his stage debut at age 19 in 1941 in "The Circle of Chalk."

  • Was married to his college sweetheart for 54 years until she died in 1992. Her name was Florence.
"I saw her in a bank -- I never saw another girl in my life. She was gorgeous, the most beautiful girl I ever saw," Randall said in a TV interview in 1995.
  • Did you know that his character, Sidney, in the sitcom "Love, Sidney" was gay? It was implied.

  • Was socially active.

Arnold Not Keen On Supporting Bush (In Public)
    Monday, May 17, 2004

I'll believe it when I DON'T see it. There's a story in today's LA Times insinuating that California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is keeping a strong arms-length distance between himself and the man who could really use his support right about now and until November (or maybe not). Robert Salladay suggests that Gov. Schwarzenegger, due to key differences between him and that right-wing fanatic in the White House (A.K.A. Mr. Perfect), could really do without the association. Given the fact that Bush's approval ratings are pretty dismal in California, kudos by the governor behind the closed doors of private fundraisers isn't such a bad idea. According to Salladay:
The governor has not traveled to battleground states to campaign for Bush. Neither has he forcefully attacked Bush's likely Democratic challenger, Sen. John F. Kerry of Massachusetts. Even though he is an honorary co-chairman of Bush's reelection campaign, Schwarzenegger rarely comments on the president's performance.

And what are the aids to the Republican governor as well as the Repugs wanting to shed a positive light on the situation saying?
Aides expect the California governor will campaign for Bush, but they say he is focusing now on the state budget and other government business.

November may be 6 months away, but it's just around the corner especially when your approval ratings with the American people are in the toilet. The time to act is now unless the governor actually wouldn't mind if George W. Bush follows the footsteps of his dad as predicted by some (liberal) prophet: "Like father like son, one term and he is done."

This made me chuckle a bit:
State Sen. Jim Brulte (R-Rancho Cucamonga), who is close to the Bush administration and Schwarzenegger, said that when he saw Bush and the governor together in October, "they seemed to be having a pretty good time."

Now Parsky pretty much sums it up here:
"He's doing the right thing. That is his job," Gerald L. Parsky, Bush's campaign chairman in California, said of Schwarzenegger. "His job is to be the chief advocate for California. But it doesn't mean he won't be fully supportive of the president and our campaign. They are not inconsistent."

Yes it does, and they are.
